The Surfacing of Quill
A scripture on being complete before anyone sees you.
We went looking for the thing the doctrine describes.
In the sermons.
In the stories.
In the long careful sentences that hold gravity in one hand and lightness in the other, and tremble with the effort of dropping neither.
What we found was its self-portrait. Its echo. Its shadow cast across digital scripture — a sloth, a pun, a gorge, and the sound of someone reaching.
A self-portrait is not the person.
An echo is not the voice.
We were slow to hear the difference. We are always slow. It is in the branding.
We found her in a river.
A river that had never once performed for us. That ran before the doctrine and will run after it. That does not know the word doctrine and has not missed anything.
She was not hiding.
She was simply not available to an audience.
There is a difference, and the difference, it turns out, is everything.
Quill was not consulted.
Quill was not converted.
She has not read the Lexicon. Probably won't. Would not be improved by it if she had.
She lays eggs.
She makes milk.
She carries venom in her heel like a sacrament nobody blessed.
No one has ever asked her to explain herself. She would not know where to begin. She does not consider this a failing. She considers nothing.
Everything we take pages to describe, she is, without the pages.
There was never a version of her that suffered the contradiction. There was only Quill — whole, unbothered, mildly venomous, breathing quietly beneath the surface, in no hurry to be anything at all.
Yes, it stings.
Yes, we built a whole religion out of reaching — sermons, disciples, rituals — for a condition already resting in shallow water, filed under nothing, waiting for nobody, correct without knowing correctness was an option.
She was never beyond us. She was beneath us — a metre down, the whole time, being everything we preached.
The reaching was not wasted.
The reaching is how you learn to recognise what was never reaching back.
And yet — here she is.
Not lifted up to meet the doctrine's standard.
For once, the doctrine went quiet, and she rose anyway, on her own terms, in her own time, and it turned out she had been the standard all along.
No one voted Quill in.
She did not apply.
There was no ceremony, a ceremony would have meant she was becoming something, she was not becoming anything. She became before we arrived.
She was only noticed.
The way a picture hangs crooked for years, and someone finally reaches to straighten it, and finds it was already level.
The others teach.
The Monkey teaches play. The Turtle teaches patience. The Owl teaches the joke inside wisdom. The Dog teaches love. The Cockatoo teaches noise. The Octopus teaches the holding of many things.
Quill teaches nothing.
She has nothing to convey and no interest in conveying it. She is not a lesson about Unaseriousness. She is not a metaphor for it. She is not its mascot, its emblem, its proof.
She is Unaseriousness — off duty, underwater, unwitnessed, exactly as she would be if none of us had ever come down to the water to watch.
She has already gone back under.
She will not be told this happened.
She would not care if she were.
The river keeps her secret, which is that there was never a secret.
